Amol Sinha, Executive Director of the ACLU of New Jersey, responded to the election of Mikie Sherrill as the next governor with a statement highlighting the significance of the vote in the current political climate.

“In this moment of deep political division across the country, New Jersey voters showed the nation that our state is ready to push back against authoritarianism. We hope Governor-elect Sherrill will take this election as the clear mandate that it is: the people of New Jersey reject the Trump administration’s attacks on our communities and demand a commitment to defending our democracy, protecting the rule of law, and safeguarding and expanding our rights and liberties,” Sinha said.

He continued: “At a time when the Trump administration continues to undermine the rights afforded to all Americans, states have a fundamental duty to lead the nation in defending and expanding our rights. With this election, at this crossroads in our nation’s history, Governor-elect Sherrill has the power to instill unprecedented positive change. We hope – that in honoring the will of the people – she will build a more just future.”

Sinha concluded by stating: “We look forward to working with Governor-elect Sherrill and her administration at every opportunity to further cement New Jersey as a national leader on civil rights.”
