The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) has responded to reports that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) violated multiple judicial orders in the state. Amol Sinha, Executive Director of ACLU-NJ, issued a statement expressing concern over the actions attributed to DHS.
“The revelation that the Department of Homeland Security violated dozens of judicial orders in New Jersey is shamefully unsurprising. This isn’t just inadvertent or sloppy; the Trump administration has repeatedly flouted judicial orders and attacked the integrity of judges. It has made it a practice to illegally arrest, detain, and deport people, causing irreversible harm to families and communities. Behind every violation is a person, a family, and a community – children have been left without their parents and lives have been shattered.
“We’re calling on our congressional representatives to leverage every method at their disposal to confront this federal administration that is intent on abusing its power without regard for the people it’s meant to serve or the institutions that precede it.”
The ACLU-NJ works as a civil rights organization committed to protecting and expanding rights guaranteed by both state and federal constitutions. The group advocates for equity by centering historically marginalized communities in its work across New Jersey. Its efforts include legal and policy advocacy on issues such as voting rights and criminal justice reform, along with providing resources like Know Your Rights guides on topics including transgender rights and interactions with immigration officials. The organization also engages in community outreach throughout the state, focusing on defending civil liberties through legal, political, and cultural means while remaining non-partisan. More information about these initiatives can be found on the official website.
