A coalition of 126 advocacy organizations, including the ACLU of New Jersey, has called on Governor Phil Murphy to sign a package of bills aimed at protecting immigrants in the state. The group sent a letter urging swift action to enact legislation that would provide new safeguards for immigrant residents.

The letter states: “Over the last year, immigrant communities across the country have been subject to escalating attacks by a federal administration that is working to erode our democracy and our constitutional rights. This is the reality for far too many New Jerseyans, and while you cannot stop ICE enforcement in New Jersey, you can make certain that New Jersey is doing everything in its power to protect and stand with its residents. This moment calls for action and leadership.”

The proposed legislative package includes the Safe Communities Act (S5036/A6308), the Privacy Protection Act (S5037/A6309), and S5038/A6310. According to advocates, these measures are designed to strengthen trust between local communities and law enforcement agencies. They also call for establishing model policies for schools, hospitals, food pantries, and other essential services. Additionally, the bills aim to ensure that all eligible residents can access state and local government services without fear that seeking help will result in detention or deportation.

The full text of the letter and a list of all 126 supporting organizations can be found online.
