The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) is investigating a fatal collision that occurred on October 10, 2025, in Middletown. The incident involved an officer from the Atlantic Highlands Police Department who was driving a marked police vehicle and collided with a cyclist riding an e-bike on State Route 36 near Orchard Avenue.

The adult male cyclist was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune following the crash. He died from his injuries on October 19, 2025. Authorities have not released the identities of either the civilian or the police officer involved.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, “the investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.”

A state law enacted in 2019 requires that any death occurring during an encounter with law enforcement be investigated by the Attorney General’s Office. This law also mandates that such cases be presented to a grand jury to decide whether there is sufficient evidence for an indictment against any officers involved.
