The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is conducting an investigation into a fatal police-involved shooting that took place on January 5, 2026, in Piscataway Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey.

Preliminary reports indicate that officers from the Piscataway Police Department responded to a residence on River Road around 5:30 p.m. after receiving a 911 call about an individual with a knife. Upon arrival, officers encountered a man armed with a knife and subsequently shot and killed him.

Following the incident, police discovered three more deceased individuals inside the home. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is handling the investigation into their deaths.

Authorities have not released the names of those involved in the incident at this time.

A state law enacted in 2019 requires the Attorney General’s Office to investigate any death occurring during an encounter with law enforcement or while a person is in custody. The law also mandates that such cases be presented to a grand jury to determine whether charges should be filed against any officers involved.

The investigation remains ongoing and no additional information has been made available.
