The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) has released the names of those involved in a fatal police shooting that occurred on January 5, 2026, in Piscataway, New Jersey. The deceased civilian was identified as Jordan Barnes, 29, a resident of Piscataway.
According to initial findings, officers from the Piscataway Police Department responded to a home on River Road around 5:30 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from a relative of Mr. Barnes. The caller reported that Mr. Barnes was threatening family members inside the residence.
Upon arrival, one officer attempted to communicate with Mr. Barnes through the closed front door while Officer John Ward looked through the sidelight and saw two people lying unresponsive on the floor. Officers then entered the home and encountered Mr. Barnes holding a kitchen knife. Despite commands to drop the knife and get on the ground, Mr. Barnes did not comply. Three officers used their tasers, but Mr. Barnes continued approaching them. Officer Ward then fired his service weapon, striking Mr. Barnes.
Officers provided medical aid until emergency services arrived, but Mr. Barnes was later pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities recovered two knives near him.
Inside the residence, police found Jeanmarie Barnes, 60; Richard A. Barnes, 86; and Brenda F. Barnes, 84; all deceased with multiple suspected stab wounds. Their deaths are being investigated by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
A state law passed in 2019 requires that any death occurring during an encounter with law enforcement be investigated by the Attorney General’s Office and presented to a grand jury for review regarding possible indictment of involved officers.
“The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time,” according to officials.
