The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) is investigating a fatal police-involved shooting that took place on July 29, 2025, in the West Berlin section of Berlin Township, Camden County, New Jersey. The incident resulted in the death of an adult male civilian. Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased.

According to preliminary findings, two detectives from the New Jersey State Police (NJSP), assigned to the United States Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force, were conducting an investigation involving the man when they encountered him on Haddon Avenue near Bate Avenue. During this encounter, one NJSP detective discharged his service weapon and struck the man. A revolver was recovered at the scene following the shooting.

Law enforcement officers provided first aid at the location before transporting the individual to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was pronounced dead at 2:13 p.m.

The investigation remains ongoing and no additional details are being released at this time.

Under a 2019 state law (N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2)), any death that occurs during an encounter with law enforcement or while a person is in custody must be investigated by the Attorney General’s Office. This law also mandates that all such cases be presented to a grand jury to determine whether charges should be brought against any involved officers.
