Attorney General’s Office investigates fatal police shooting in Jersey City

The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is conducting an investigation into a fatal police-involved shooting that took place in Jersey City, New Jersey, in the early hours of October 21, 2025. The incident resulted in the death of an adult male civilian. Authorities have not yet released the names of the civilian or the officer involved.

According to initial findings, officers from the Jersey City Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit encountered the individual near Bergen and Virginia avenues shortly after 1:00 a.m. on October 21. An exchange of gunfire occurred, during which the civilian was struck. Police recovered a firearm at the scene. Emergency medical aid was administered before the individual was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at about 1:44 a.m.

The investigation remains active, and officials have stated that no further details are available at this time.

Under a 2019 New Jersey law, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), the Attorney General’s Office is required to investigate any death that occurs during an encounter with law enforcement officers acting in their official capacity, or while the individual is in custody. The law also mandates that these investigations be presented to a grand jury, which will determine whether the evidence supports returning an indictment against the officer or officers involved.
