The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is conducting an investigation into a fatal shooting involving a police officer in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The incident took place on Friday, August 8, 2025, and resulted in the death of a woman whose identity has not yet been released.
According to initial findings, officers from the New Brunswick Police Department responded to reports that a resident was walking with a knife in the hallway of an apartment building on Neilson Street. Upon arrival, officers spoke with a female resident who remained behind her closed apartment door. The woman later exited her apartment holding a knife and encountered police in the hallway.
Police used pepper spray and a taser before one officer fired his service weapon, striking the woman. Officers provided first aid at the scene, and she was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Authorities recovered a knife at the location.
A law enacted in 2019 requires that any death occurring during an encounter with law enforcement or while an individual is in custody must be investigated by the Attorney General’s Office. The statute also mandates that such cases be presented to a grand jury for consideration of possible indictment against involved officers.
The investigation remains ongoing and no additional details have been released.
