Bloustein School alumni Josephine (O’Grady) Michener and Doug Leung contributed to a new ARCGIS StoryMap for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The project highlights key programs such as the Hazardous Discharge Site Remediation Fund Program, Brownfield Development Area Program, and Landfill Development Program. The StoryMap is designed to provide information and resources for regulated communities and showcases notable site remediation and redevelopment projects managed by the Office of Brownfield & Community Revitalization.

Josephine Michener serves as a Hazardous Discharge Site Remediation Fund (HDSRF) Coordinator at NJDEP’s Office of Brownfield & Community Revitalization. In her position, she reviews grant and loan applications for the HDSRF, supports Brownfield Project Managers with case management, and is a member of the Regulatory Committee of the Brownfield Coalition of the Northeast.

Doug Leung currently works as a Hazard Mitigation Planner for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. He previously served as an Environmental Services Trainee in NJDEP’s Office of Brownfield and Community Revitalization from September 2023 to June 2024.

The Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University provides education and research in planning and public policy with an emphasis on promoting equitable and sustainable communities. The school offers undergraduate and graduate programs in fields such as public policy, health administration, urban planning, and public informatics. It also operates research centers focused on community development, transportation, health, workforce development, and energy policy according to its official website.

Bloustein School has received national recognition for its programs. Its graduate urban planning program ranked third nationally while its undergraduate public health program ranked fourth. The school also holds accreditations for its graduate public policy program and Master of Health Administration program from relevant accrediting bodies.

Since its establishment in 1992 as part of Rutgers University—the State University of New Jersey—the Bloustein School has worked to foster just, socially inclusive, environmentally sustainable, and healthy communities at various levels. Stuart Shapiro became dean in 2023.

The school recognizes distinguished alumni through its Hall of Fame established in 2013 and annual achievement awards dating back to 1994.
