Julia Sass Rubin, a professor at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, participated in a panel organized by The New York Times Opinion to evaluate the candidates for New Jersey’s upcoming gubernatorial election on November 4.
The race features Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a congresswoman serving her fourth term and a former Navy helicopter pilot, against Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a businessman and former assemblyman making his third bid for governor. The political climate is influenced by President Trump’s declining approval rating in New Jersey and questions about how voters will respond to Ciattarelli’s association with the Trump administration. This election, along with Virginia’s governor’s race, is seen as an early indicator of public reaction to President Trump’s leadership during his second term.
The panel brought together 11 individuals from various backgrounds—including union leadership, restaurant ownership, and social justice work—to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate. The discussion revealed differing opinions on how much weight should be given to Trump’s influence in the race. One panelist stated: “I have a problem with anyone lying down and aligning themselves with Trump.” At the same time, several participants expressed concerns that Sherrill had not clearly defined her vision for the state. One comment was: “Now is the time to fight,” while others described feeling “confused” by her lack of specificity.
The insights from this panel are intended to help inform voters as they prepare to cast their ballots next month.
