The Carneys Point Sewerage Authority has completed an upgrade to its sanitary sewer infrastructure, funded by $1,441,881 in loans from the New Jersey Water Bank. The Water Bank is a low-interest funding program managed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank (I-Bank).

Because the project improved water quality and met affordability standards, it qualified for full principal forgiveness, meaning the authority will not need to repay any of the loan amount. This approach enabled the authority to avoid all project costs that would have been incurred through independent financing.

The improvements included removing an existing sanitary sewer lift station on Lafayette Road in Carneys Point Township. New gravity mains were built to redirect sewage flow downstream, allowing for demolition of the old pumping station. This change is projected to save about $950,000 over 50 years in electricity, labor, maintenance, and repairs.

The project also reduced risks associated with aging infrastructure and protected local water quality by minimizing potential system failures. An estimated 16 direct one-year construction jobs were generated during implementation.

With the previous pump station reaching the end of its service life, township officials said reconstruction was necessary to maintain continuous service for residents and businesses. Eliminating energy demands from the outdated facility also supports Carneys Point Township Sewerage Authority’s long-term sustainability objectives and may qualify as a green initiative.

“I’m pleased to announce the successful completion of a critical infrastructure project that strengthens our township’s sanitary sewer system and protects our local environment,” said Carneys Point Mayor Kenneth Brown. “Thanks to $1.4 million in financing through the New Jersey Water Bank, we were able to make these improvements at no net cost to our community.

“This is a smart, sustainable project that reflects our commitment to sound infrastructure and fiscal responsibility. I’d like to thank the Carneys Point Sewerage Authority, the NJDEP, and the I-Bank for their partnership and support in helping us deliver lasting value to our community.”

Design work was performed by RHT Services, Triad Incorporated, and Sickels Associates; South State Inc. handled construction duties.
