A recent statement from Chrissy Buteas, President and Chief Executive Officer of the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey (HINJ), raises concerns about the impact of a federal “Most Favored Nation” (MFN) drug pricing policy on medical innovation in the United States. According to Buteas, such a policy could undermine the country’s ability to deliver life-saving treatments and risk shifting global leadership in biopharmaceutical research to China.
“When a patient learns of a life-altering diagnosis – an aggressive blood cancer, a progressive autoimmune disorder, or a rare disease – the first question they’ll ask is: Is there a new treatment that can help me? Increasingly, the answer is yes, thanks to America’s life sciences and the decades of scientific discovery made possible by our unrivaled innovation ecosystem,” Buteas stated.
She further argued that implementing an MFN policy would not only threaten this system but also strengthen China’s position in biopharmaceutical research. “But today, a federal ‘Most Favored Nation’ (MFN) drug pricing policy threatens the very system that delivers those life-saving breakthroughs. Worse, it risks ceding America’s global leadership in medical innovation to China – a nation already pouring billions into biopharmaceutical research, tightening its grip on raw materials, and signaling a willingness to weaponize supply chains,” she said.
“MFN isn’t just a pricing policy. It’s a strategic mistake. Read the full op-ed here,” Buteas concluded.
