Chrissy Buteas, President and Chief Executive Officer of the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey, said on May 14 that the organization recognizes the Assembly Appropriations Committee and bill sponsors for their leadership following the committee’s passage of A-1502, known as the Patient and Provider Protection Act.
The legislation aims to address healthcare costs for patients while maintaining New Jersey’s position in medical innovation. The topic is significant as it seeks to balance access to medicines with continued research efforts in the state’s life sciences sector.
“The Committee and the bill sponsors should be recognized for their leadership on helping lower costs for patients while ensuring New Jersey remains at the forefront of medical discovery and innovation. Maintaining the state’s reputation as the ‘Medicine Chest of the World’ requires a balanced approach that both expands access to medicines and encourages the groundbreaking research that delivers tomorrow’s cures,” Buteas said.
She added, “The companies that research and discover new medicines typically receive less than half the money spent on those medicines, while PBMs and other middlemen artificially inflate the cost and then keep a large percentage for themselves. Reforming these practices and making healthcare more affordable is priority number one and we thank the Committee, the bill sponsors, and all stakeholders for their commitment to New Jersey patients and families.”
The HealthCare Institute of New Jersey contributes to public health education, supports initiatives advancing biopharmaceutical progress, operates as a nonprofit dedicated to promoting policies supporting innovation, patient access, economic growth within life sciences industry, engages in advocacy at state and federal levels to influence policies fostering innovation in life sciences, works to build alliances advancing healthcare innovation enhancing patient care, functions as a trade association focused on biopharmaceuticals/medical technology fields, and maintains its headquarters in Princeton according to the official website.
