Kim Kavin of FreelanceBusting.com appeared on the latest episode of “Minding Your Business” on News 12+ to discuss her new research report, “Extremism Vs. Entrepreneurism,” which examines New Jersey’s approach to policies affecting gig workers. The discussion aired March 24 and focused on proposed changes that could make it much harder to work as an independent contractor in the state.

Kavin said her findings show significant concern among legal experts about the direction of these policies. “If you look at the attorney analysis for this… they’re using language like ‘this is an existential threat to independent work’,” Kavin said. “One lawyer wrote that this would ‘almost entirely eviscerate the ability to be an independent contractor in New Jersey.’ You don’t hear lawyers saying things like that very often, let alone putting them in writing. That’s what we’re talking about here.” She added, “What’s happening here is not normal.”

The topic matters because many workers and businesses rely on flexible arrangements offered by independent contracting, which could be affected if regulations become more restrictive.

“Minding Your Business” is a weekly television program produced by the New Jersey Business and Industry Association (NJBIA). The show has received seven Telly Awards over three years, including a gold award in 2024 for Interview & Talk Show category.
