Book coach Kim O’Hara spoke at a recent online seminar organized by the New Jersey Business & Industry Association’s Women Business Leaders Council, focusing on the importance of honesty in storytelling for professionals. O’Hara, who has assisted over 50 thought leaders and business visionaries in turning their ideas into best-selling books, emphasized the value of communicating personal values.

“Communicating what your values are is essential because people want to be led by the values they align with,” O’Hara said. “A deeply honest story that exemplifies who you are and what you stand for … is also told through how you behave.”

O’Hara addressed concerns some business professionals have about sharing their values and experiences publicly. She noted that rather than losing customers, being open about one’s values tends to attract like-minded clients.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re like a real estate agent, or a life coach, or a dentist,” O’Hara said. “When we are aligned with our values in the stories we tell about ourselves, in the stories we tell about how we run our businesses, we attract people that are also in alignment with those personal stories,” O’Hara said.

The seminar, titled “Gaining Authority with Your Personal Story,” is available for viewing online and was presented by the NJBIA Women Business Leaders Council.
