Groundbreaking has commenced on the new Netflix Studios at Fort Monmouth, marking a significant step forward for the East Coast production hub. The event was attended by state, regional, and local leaders who gathered to witness the beginning of this major development project.

Governor Phil Murphy emphasized the potential of this collaboration, stating, “With Netflix and New Jersey working hand in hand, this much is clear: The sky is the limit.” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos also expressed optimism about the future of film and television in New Jersey. “Today the film and television industry in New Jersey is stronger than ever,” he said. “Today, we’re taking another step forward.”

Netflix plans to invest $1 billion to transform the 292-acre former U.S. Army installation into a premier production hub featuring 12 soundstages totaling nearly 500,000 square feet. Sarandos highlighted Netflix’s economic contributions over recent years: “And we’re excited to continue our investment in the U.S. and New Jersey in the coming years.”

Fort Monmouth has been inactive since September 15, 2011. Its redevelopment was announced in 2022 with support from NJBIA and other business groups. Last December, it received approval for Aspire tax incentives up to $387 million.

Michele Siekerka, NJBIA President and CEO stated that this project will create thousands of jobs and boost local businesses: “When you’re talking about 1,500 full-time production jobs and more than 3,000 construction jobs… it will also galvanize small businesses in the area.”

Governor Murphy confirmed that initial approvals have been secured from Eatontown, Oceanport, and Monmouth County for phase one of construction. Full demolition is expected to take approximately 13 months with an opening projected for 2028.

Senators Vin Gopal (D-11) and Declan O’Scanlon (R-13) shared personal connections to Fort Monmouth during their remarks at the event. O’Scanlon recalled childhood memories tied to the site: “Like so many people who grew up here… It was a mystery before we got behind the gates.” Gopal noted his mother’s work at Fort Monmouth: “I have memories of coming here as a child.”

Both senators acknowledged Governor Murphy’s role in facilitating discussions with Netflix early on. Gopal praised Murphy’s legacy-building efforts related to this project.
