The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL) has announced the availability of $1.5 million in grants to support technological and scientific research. The Innovation and Research Fellowship Program (IRFP) aims to encourage Ph.D. graduates and doctoral candidates to continue their research in partnership with science and technology companies in the state.
The IRFP grants will be awarded to qualified employers, who must apply jointly with a fellow candidate by October 28 at 3 p.m. via email. These fellowships can last up to two years, with most of the funding intended for the fellow’s salary.
“Through this vital program, we are not only investing in the brilliant minds of today but also securing New Jersey’s position as a leader in the scientific and technological advancements of tomorrow,” said Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo. “We are proud to support collaborations that create opportunities for researchers to excel in their fields and drive the progress of our state.”
In the first year, fellows may receive a salary up to $85,000 through the grant. For the second year, this amount increases to $95,000, with participating companies required to contribute at least $25,000 toward the fellow’s salary. There is no cap on total yearly salary for fellows; employers may pay above these amounts if they choose.
Employers may also request additional funds for equipment purchases or conference attendance, provided these do not exceed 5% of the fellow’s total salary and are properly justified in their application. All non-salary expenditures require NJDOL review and approval.
