The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce has expressed support for the decision by Gov. Mikie Sherrill, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), and the FIFA World Cup 26 New York New Jersey Host Committee to change their approach to fan engagement for the upcoming World Cup.
Instead of hosting a single fan fest in Jersey City, organizers will now focus on creating community-based fan zones, watch parties, street fairs, and festivals throughout the state. This strategy is expected to distribute economic benefits more widely among local businesses and municipalities. Matches are scheduled in Northern New Jersey and Philadelphia, potentially increasing economic activity across different regions of the state.
The chamber noted that this new plan aligns with what many business groups have been requesting for months: “This renewed focus on activating municipalities and creating meaningful opportunities for small businesses reflects what many in the business community — including local, regional, and diverse chambers of commerce — have been advocating for over many months. Expanding the footprint of fan engagement will drive foot traffic to Main Streets, restaurants, retailers, and hospitality businesses in communities throughout New Jersey.”
As preparations continue ahead of June’s kickoff, the chamber emphasized the need for a straightforward application process from NJEDA so that municipalities can participate effectively: “As we move closer to kickoff in June, it will be important that the NJEDA’s application process and criteria for participation are simple, transparent, and streamlined. With only months remaining, municipalities need clarity and efficiency to fully leverage this opportunity.”
Chamber President Tom Bracken added: “The World Cup is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we look forward to working alongside state and local partners to help promote participation, support small businesses, and ensure communities throughout New Jersey share in the economic benefits.”
