Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin has announced measures to safeguard voting rights during New Jersey’s 2025 primary election. The Department of Law and Public Safety (LPS) will implement a Voter Protection Initiative to address voting and civil rights issues that may arise during early voting and on Election Day.
Early in-person voting begins on June 3, 2025, with LPS playing a crucial role in protecting voters’ rights and assisting with legal matters related to the election process. The initiative will work with community stakeholders to identify and resolve issues affecting voting access under the New Jersey Civil Rights Act and the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination.
“Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy,” stated Attorney General Platkin. “We have the systems in place to address and resolve voting-related issues as they arise, and we will not tolerate any attempts to interfere with or disrupt our democratic process.”
The LPS provides resources for voters, including answers to frequently asked questions about their right to vote. Additionally, a team of attorneys from the Division of Law will be available around the clock to advise county election officials.
The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability within LPS monitors claims of voter intimidation, improper electioneering, fraud, and other violations. Reports of interference are directed to local and federal law enforcement as necessary. The New Jersey Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell will monitor for both cyber and physical threats.
In October 2024, Attorney General Platkin issued guidance ensuring law enforcement officers understand their role in elections while protecting voters from intimidation or coercion.
Electioneering within a “protective zone” extending 100 feet from polling sites is a criminal offense. Poll site officials typically handle interference within this zone, with law enforcement involvement when needed.
Outside LPS efforts, information on county-level election offices is available for public inquiries. Voters can report issues via the State’s Voter Information line at 1-877-NJVOTER (1-877-658-6837).
Reports of discrimination or harassment related to voting can be made through the NJ BIAS online portal or by calling 1-800-277-BIAS (1-800-277-2427). Complaints may be addressed during or after the election depending on urgency.
