The New Jersey State Police are urging residents to prioritize safety during the upcoming July 4th holiday weekend. As traffic is expected to increase, troopers will be actively patrolling to ensure road safety.
Last year, the holiday period saw seven fatal crashes resulting in eight deaths, with alcohol and drugs being factors in three incidents. To prevent such tragedies, the police recommend using taxis, transportation apps like Uber and Lyft, staying with friends or family, or having a designated driver.
To enhance safety measures this year, more than 142 additional troopers will be deployed from 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 3rd until 6:00 a.m. on Monday, July 7th. These officers will focus on aggressive driving, speeding, seatbelt usage, distracted driving, and DWI enforcement alongside their regular duties.
Motorists are reminded of New Jersey’s Move Over Law which requires drivers to change lanes when approaching stationary emergency vehicles displaying flashing lights. If unable to move over safely, drivers must slow down below the posted speed limit.
In addition to road patrols, the State Police Marine Bureau will participate in “Operation Dry Water,” a national campaign aimed at preventing boating under the influence incidents. The initiative seeks to promote safe boating practices and reduce water-related accidents during the holiday.
