The New Jersey Business and Industry Association held a Government Affairs Policy Committee meeting, according to an April 23 announcement, featuring guest speakers who discussed the state’s fiscal policies, legislative engagement, and key regulatory issues.

The meeting addressed topics relevant to New Jersey employers as they navigate ongoing legislative changes. The association represents private-sector employers throughout the state and aims to advance their competitive excellence while providing essential information and services, according to the official website.

Jay Redd, Senior Director of Legislative Affairs for Governor Mikie Sherrill, said about constituent engagement: “The governor is a big believer in constituent responsiveness — whether it’s for legislators, whether it’s for the business community, or whether it’s just in general, because it’s got to work. I know that sometimes folks will reach out because you have a client working on an issue, but you can’t get a response. We’re doing our part to make sure we’re being responsive… Please reach out and do it — that is a role I’m here to play.”

Christopher Emigholz, NJBIA Chief Government Affairs Officer, commented on Governor Sherrill’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget proposal: “BIA commends the governor for holding the line on spending… Over the eight years of the Murphy administration, we had $6 billion of stuff added after the governor proposed his budget… Governor Sherrill was looking at a budget that was supposed to have grown $3 billion this year from the one she inherited… Some people are critical… but that extra spending has grown to a level that’s not sustainable. We’re saying thank you… if there’s any new spending it should be in workforce development, innovation or infrastructure.” Ray Cantor addressed concerns over pending environmental legislation: “The environmental community is out there in full force holding rallies… We are arguing against why it’s not free money and how it’s going to harm the New Jersey economy… But we are always being very vigilant.”

Althea Ford spoke about surveillance pricing bills affecting retailers: “We’re wanting to ensure that at the end of the day retailers are not pointed out or singled out for practices that are part of normal business operations… We believe there are some amendments… separating out language around electronic shelving labels… making sure legislation doesn’t go after certain opportunities for retailers.”

Founded as what it describes as “the nation’s largest statewide employer association,” NJBIA facilitates partnerships among businesses, government entities and academic institutions according to its official website. Michele Siekerka serves as president and chief executive officer according to NJBIA.

NJBIA continues offering advocacy initiatives along with practical information and cost-saving benefits designed for business prosperity according to its official website. The association encourages interested parties from member organizations to join policy committees through its advocacy page.
