NJBIA is calling on New Jersey residents to contact their federal representatives in the Senate, urging them to overturn the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) decision from December 2024. This decision allows California to ban the sales of new gas, diesel, and traditional hybrid vehicles, which NJBIA argues limits vehicle choice for millions of Americans and increases costs for families nationwide.

The proposed ban affects a dozen states that plan to follow California’s lead, representing 35% of the U.S. population. NJBIA warns that without intervention, millions will face restricted vehicle options and potential job threats in the auto and energy sectors.

In response to these concerns, the U.S. House of Representatives has passed a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution aimed at overturning the EPA waiver granted under former President Joe Biden. This waiver would enable California to require at least 80% electric vehicles by 2035. The Senate is anticipated to vote on this measure soon.

Ray Cantor, NJBIA Deputy Government Affairs Officer, emphasized the importance of action: “We are asking as many New Jersey residents as possible to tell their representative to vote yes on a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to overturn California’s gas car ban.” He highlighted that such a ban could exacerbate New Jersey’s affordability issues and pointed out infrastructure challenges.

Residents are encouraged to express their views by filling out an online form directed at their federal representatives.
