A recent report from Resume.org indicates that a significant portion of U.S. companies are moving toward greater reliance on artificial intelligence in their hiring processes. The survey, conducted among nearly 1,400 full-time workers familiar with their organizations’ hiring practices, found that one-third expect AI tools to manage the entire hiring process by 2026.
Currently, 57% of companies use AI for various stages of recruitment, such as resume reviews, candidate assessments, communication with applicants, and onboarding. Of those already using these technologies, 74% reported an improvement in the quality of hires.
Despite these positive outcomes, more than half of respondents expressed concerns about potential drawbacks. These include the risk that AI might screen out qualified candidates, introduce bias into decision-making, or operate without sufficient human oversight.
The trend toward automation is expected to continue: 74% of surveyed workers said their company plans to increase its use of AI in hiring over the next year.
Among companies using AI for interviews—about 34%—half permit the technology to conduct interviews directly. While most maintain some level of human supervision (71%), others allow AI to run interviews independently or decide on a case-by-case basis.
Kara Dennison, head of career advising at Resume.org, emphasized transparency in these evolving practices. “Companies should be open with candidates about AI’s role in hiring to build trust, improve the candidate experience, and meet evolving compliance standards,” Dennison said.
She added: “This means clearly explaining where and how AI is used, whether it makes recommendations or rejections, the level of human oversight, and what data is collected. This proactive approach promotes fairness, prepares candidates, and demonstrates a commitment to ethical, effective hiring practices.”
