Brett Neff, a political commentator on X, said streamlined regulations and fraud controls have lowered auto premiums, noting New Jersey’s rideshare insurance mandates can drive up costs.

“Auto premiums are falling in states that have eased burdensome insurance rules,” said Neff, Independent Commentator.

According to Neff, he shared an opinion piece from the Wall Street Journal on X, which discussed the decline in auto premiums in states that have eased insurance regulations and curtailed litigation. The article explored how these policy changes impact the affordability of coverage.

In New Jersey, rideshare services are required to maintain $1.5 million in liability coverage for trips. This amount is 30 times higher than the minimum required for personal vehicles, resulting in nearly one-third of rider fares being allocated toward insurance costs. This situation has led to calls for reforms to align requirements and reduce expenses for both drivers and users.

Across the United States, similar rideshare insurance mandates exist in various states, including New Jersey. These mandates require $1.5 million in liability coverage, significantly higher than personal vehicle levels and accounting for a substantial portion of fares. In California, reforms have lowered Uninsured Motorist/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage to $300,000 per accident effective 2026.

Uber, who advocates on behalf of the thousands of NJ residents who drive on its platform, supports balanced rules to reduce fares and expand gig work access. In 2025, Uber launched a New Jersey political action committee supporting candidates who back lower ride‑share costs and push for regulatory changes to reduce high insurance‑related fares in the state, according to New Jersey Globe.
