Travelers in the New York and New Jersey area are advised to plan ahead due to ongoing construction and lane closures affecting major transportation hubs. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has issued a travel advisory for June 20 to 26, urging travelers to use mass transit options and allow extra travel time.
Significant construction is underway at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) as part of a $19 billion redevelopment project. Motorists and for-hire vehicle users should anticipate delays or reroutes due to detours or road closures. “Customers are strongly advised to use mass transit to and from the airport,” stated the Port Authority. Available options include MTA New York City Transit subway, buses, or MTA Long Island Rail Road.
At JFK, for-hire vehicle pickups have been relocated at Terminals 4, 5, and 7 due to construction. Terminal 4 passengers can use a free shuttle bus to Lot 66, while those at Terminals 5 and 7 can take the free AirTrain to Howard Beach Pickup Lot. Additionally, the Terminal 7 Orange Garage is closed for construction; customers are encouraged to pre-book parking in Terminal 8 Red Garage.
Other affected areas include George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, and Lincoln Tunnel with planned lane closures throughout the week. For example, all eastbound lanes on the lower level of George Washington Bridge will be closed from Friday night through Saturday morning.
The PATH service will also experience changes from June 21-22 due to rail replacement work on the Journal Square-33 St via Hoboken line. Trains will operate every 20 minutes with additional stops at Exchange Place.
Airports including Newark Liberty International Airport and LaGuardia Airport are encouraging travelers to utilize public transit options. LaGuardia Link Q70 bus service remains fare-free year-round as per an announcement by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul in April 2022.
