The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has issued a travel advisory for January 23 to 29, urging travelers to plan ahead due to expected winter weather and scheduled lane closures at several major transportation facilities.

In anticipation of an upcoming winter storm, the agency has activated emergency operations centers across John F. Kennedy International (JFK), Newark Liberty International (EWR), and LaGuardia (LGA) airports. Staff and snow removal equipment are in place to maintain safe airport operations. The Port Authority is coordinating with airlines and terminal operators to manage disruptions. Travelers are advised to check flight status with their airlines or visit the Federal Aviation Administration website before heading to the airport.

A previously announced outage for AirTrain Newark replacement construction on Monday has been canceled due to inclement weather, ensuring that AirTrain Newark will continue operating between the Airport Train Station and all terminals.

Motorists using any of the Port Authority’s six bridges and tunnels—including the George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, and Outerbridge Crossing—should expect various overnight or daytime lane closures throughout the week. Commuters are encouraged to sign up for email alerts about traffic changes and allow extra travel time.

PATH riders should note that overnight maintenance will close certain stations from 11:59 p.m. to 5 a.m., with alternate entrances available at nearby locations. Updates can be found via the PATH mobile app, RidePATH.

At area airports, passengers are reminded that only REAL ID-compliant identification or other acceptable forms listed by TSA will be accepted at security checkpoints. Those without compliant IDs may face additional screening.

To manage parking demand at JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty airports, travelers arriving by private car are strongly encouraged to pre-book parking spaces online at least 24 hours in advance; otherwise they may incur higher fees or find limited availability.

Ongoing construction related to JFK’s $19 billion redevelopment project continues to affect roadways around terminals 1 through 8. Motorists are urged to use mass transit options such as MTA subway lines or Long Island Rail Road services connecting directly with AirTrain JFK stations.

At Terminal 5 in JFK, ride app pickups have been relocated offsite; taxi stands have moved within parking garages; and specific parking levels remain reserved for those with special needs. Similar changes apply at Terminal 7 regarding arrivals locations and ride pickups.

LaGuardia Airport continues offering fare-free Q70 bus service year-round as part of efforts encouraging public transit use for airport access.

At Newark Liberty International Airport, shuttle pick-ups for hotels and rental cars have shifted from P4 station to P3 station due to ongoing AirTrain construction activity. More information is available on the Port Authority’s website.

The Port Authority oversees transportation infrastructure in a port district covering approximately 1,500 square miles across New York and New Jersey. Its responsibilities include managing airports such as JFK, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia Airport, bridges, tunnels like those affected by this week’s closures, port facilities, cargo operations, as well as rail systems including PATH (source). The agency funds its projects primarily through its own revenues (source) while supporting regional economic growth through investments in advanced transportation infrastructure (source).
