The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has initiated a significant construction project aimed at improving transit access to the Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station. This $160 million initiative is designed to benefit underserved areas in Newark and Elizabeth by providing a new entry point that will enhance connectivity to AirTrain Newark, Amtrak, and NJ TRANSIT rail services.
A key component of this project involves extending the existing pedestrian bridge over platforms and tracks at the station to a new public access area on Frelinghuysen Avenue. The site will feature a pickup/drop-off point for various vehicles, as well as access for bicyclists and pedestrians. The anticipated completion date for this development is 2026.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy emphasized the transformative nature of the project, stating it will “enhance regional connectivity surrounding Newark Liberty International Airport.” He noted its potential to improve mobility and economic opportunities in local communities.
Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole highlighted the symbolic importance of the project as both a literal and figurative bridge connecting previously isolated communities to broader transportation networks. Executive Director Rick Cotton reiterated that the station’s redevelopment is about more than just transit; it’s about ensuring equitable access to opportunities for all residents.
Ralph D’Apuzzo, lead program director for the Port Authority’s redevelopment efforts at Newark Liberty, stressed that modern airports should serve not only as gateways but also play vital roles within their communities. The project aims to reduce travel times significantly for residents who currently face lengthy journeys when accessing airport facilities or commuting via public transportation.
U.S. Senator Cory Booker praised this investment in infrastructure as a crucial step toward enhancing connectivity between Newark Liberty International Airport, Newark-Penn Station, and New York-Penn Station. Similarly, U.S. Representative LaMonica McIver underscored how this development could create jobs and strengthen neighborhoods by ensuring community inclusion in regional growth.
This extensive undertaking forms part of an overarching strategy—the EWR Vision Plan—by the Port Authority aimed at supporting future airport growth while better serving passengers, airlines, and neighboring areas. As part of this plan, several other projects are underway or planned at Newark Liberty International Airport including terminal upgrades and improvements to airside operations such as taxiway networks.
Overall expectations from these collective efforts include generating 675 total jobs with direct wages amounting up to $125 million alongside nearly $300 million in total economic activity throughout implementation phases.
