The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reported significant activity across its facilities for April 2025. The agency’s commercial airports recorded their third-busiest April, with approximately 11.9 million passengers. This marked a slight decline of 2 percent from the record-breaking April in 2024, primarily due to flight cancellations at Newark Liberty International Airport caused by Federal Aviation Administration air traffic control issues.
International travel demand remained strong, with 4.3 million international passengers in April, surpassing the previous record set in April 2024. Over the first four months of the year, the airports welcomed about 43.8 million passengers, a decrease of 1.5 percent compared to the same period in 2024.
The Port of New York and New Jersey experienced robust growth in cargo activity, handling 751,194 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in April. This represented a 24 percent increase from April 2019 and a rise of 6 percent from April 2024. For the year to date, the port managed nearly three million TEUs, showing substantial increases over both pre-pandemic levels and last year’s figures.
PATH commuter rail system ridership reached its second-highest level since the pandemic began, with a total of 5.2 million passengers in April—11 percent higher than April last year—and reaching 74 percent of pre-pandemic ridership levels from April 2019.
In terms of vehicular traffic through tunnels and bridges, around ten million eastbound vehicles crossed via the agency’s six crossings during April. This figure was slightly below those recorded in both April last year and pre-pandemic volumes from April 2019.
Overall, these numbers reflect ongoing recovery trends across various sectors within the Port Authority’s purview as they continue adapting post-pandemic operations to meet growing demands.
