Over the past five years, 480,000 customers of Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) have collectively saved more than $900 million on utility bills by participating in the company’s energy efficiency programs. This information comes from PSE&G’s latest Clean Energy Future-Energy Efficiency (CEF-EE) report.
The savings are attributed to a variety of energy efficiency initiatives that help customers reduce energy consumption and manage costs. The offerings include home energy assessments, rebates for appliances and HVAC systems, lighting solutions, equipment upgrades, and access to energy-efficient products through the PSE&G Marketplace.
According to the CEF-EE report, over 105,000 home energy assessments were completed, nearly 350,000 smart thermostats were sold via the marketplace, and approximately 150,000 rebates were claimed for upgrades to energy-efficient appliances. The company has delivered about $940 million in rebates to help offset costs for these upgrades. More than 30,000 old appliances have also been recycled through PSE&G’s recycling program.
Business customers across New Jersey have also benefited from these programs. Approximately 20,000 businesses implemented over 32,000 projects aimed at improving operational efficiency and managing utility expenses. Among them are around 2,000 small businesses that participated in the Direct Install Program—mainly involving lighting or commercial HVAC projects eligible for on-bill repayment—which resulted in close to $25 million in utility bill savings.
St. Joseph’s Health is one example cited in the report. The organization is carrying out energy efficiency projects at its Paterson and Wayne facilities with support from PSE&G incentives. Scott Reilly, Director of Maintenance and Engineering at St. Joseph’s Health stated: “Every dollar we’re not spending on energy is a dollar we can put back into patient care.”
Participants in these programs achieved about 3.1 million megawatt hours of electric savings annually—enough to power roughly 453,000 homes—and natural gas savings of approximately 80 million therms per year. According to the report, this has helped avoid about 2.3 million tons of carbon emissions each year—the equivalent of removing more than half a million gasoline-powered cars from roads annually.

Maintaining affordability and enhancing the customer experience remain central to this work. The investments we make through these programs largely flow back into New Jersey, supporting local businesses, contractors and trade allies while delivering value for customers.”
The CEF-EE report also notes that investments in energy efficiency support workforce development throughout New Jersey. Through PSE&G’s sponsored Clean Energy Jobs Program, more than 7,300 workers have been placed into clean energy careers.
