Ryan Jenkins, author of Connectable, spoke about the importance of building connections in a multi-generational legal profession during the Opening Business Session of the New Jersey State Bar Association Annual Meeting and Convention on May 14. Jenkins discussed how connection has shifted from being viewed as a soft skill to becoming a strategic imperative for attorneys working alongside colleagues from different generations.

The topic is relevant as workplaces see more generational diversity and increasing reports of disconnection among professionals. Jenkins said that with so many different generations present in today’s workplace, learning to connect effectively is critical for success.

Jenkins urged attendees to remain open to understanding people from generations they may not be familiar with. He encouraged lawyers to view intergenerational communication as an opportunity rather than a challenge.

The program highlighted that making meaningful connections can help bridge gaps between age groups and foster collaboration within the legal community. As connection becomes more essential, attorneys are encouraged to develop these skills actively.

Jenkins concluded by emphasizing the need for ongoing learning and openness among legal professionals: “He urged attendees to be open to learning more about people from generations they don’t understand.”

Looking ahead, participants were invited to read further about these ideas and explore additional resources related to building connections across generational lines.
