STONO Public Affairs has announced a new round of expungement clinics as part of its Summer of Freedom initiative. These events are designed to help formerly incarcerated individuals access legal services related to clearing their criminal records. The clinics are organized in partnership with the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender and Volunteers of America Delaware Valley.
James Gee, founder of STONO Public Affairs, said, “The collateral consequences from a criminal record can follow former offenders for decades, impacting their ability to secure a job or find housing. STONO’s expungement clinics aim to meet people where they are, connecting them with vital services in community hubs like churches and barbershops.”
At these clinics, attendees will be able to speak with legal professionals who can assist with eligibility screenings for expungement, help prepare applications, and provide further guidance. While walk-ins are welcome, pre-registration is encouraged.
Jennifer Sellitti, New Jersey Public Defender, stated, “The expansion of our Expungement Unit has made it possible for us to attend more community events like those hosted by STONO. It’s a privilege to bring our team directly into neighborhoods, into barbershops, churches, and the very communities where we live and work, to connect with people who deserve second chances.”
Dan Lombardo, CEO of Volunteers of America Delaware Valley, added, “We see everyday the impact a criminal record continues to have on people who have served their time and then some. We are excited to be partnering with STONO once again, to offer the life changing opportunity of expungement to even more people around New Jersey.”
The upcoming events include:
– August 13 at Razor Sharp Barbershop in Trenton
– August 20 at Truth Be Told Barbershop in Mays Landing
– August 27 at Calvary Baptist Church in Paterson
Further clinics are planned for Jersey City, Atlantic City and Willingboro in September.
