New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and Civil Service Chair Allison Chris Myers have initiated the second year of the Governor’s Fellows Program. This state employment initiative offers recent graduates and emerging professionals a pathway to careers in public service.
According to a press release issued by the governor’s office, this year’s program will build on the opportunities provided in 2023 and aim to reduce barriers to public employment. In 2023, 14 state agencies participated in the program, each hosting a fellow starting in September. This year, 15 agencies are seeking fellows in critical public policy areas such as food security, homelessness prevention, and artificial intelligence (AI) equity.
"The program has allowed us to identify and connect with qualified and passionate individuals looking to make a positive impact on state government," Murphy stated in the press release. "We are able to match prospective state employees with roles that pertain to their individual interests and skillsets. This initiative strengthens our workforce while simultaneously building and supporting the next generation of leaders."
Fellows enter into one-year employment commitments with a state agency. During their tenures, they receive mentorship and networking opportunities from the Governor’s Office. They may also be considered for permanent employment by the host department when their fellowship ends.
"The New Jersey Governor’s Fellows Program is an exceptional avenue for people to enter state positions whether they are individuals with education and experience, young professionals, or recent college graduates," Myers stated in the press release. "This Fellows Program is an awesome opportunity for people to learn the workings of New Jersey state government and become acquainted with all that a career in public service has to offer."
Candidates for the Governor’s Fellows Program must meet several qualifications, including effective communication and teamwork skills, excellence in professional or academic achievement, proven leadership ability, and a demonstrated commitment to public policy. The application deadline is June 14, 2024, with interviews scheduled over the summer.
