The League of Women Voters of New Jersey celebrated the 2024 Making Democracy Work awards and announced the winners of the annual honor during an event held at the Madison Hotel in Morristown.
The 2024 Making Democracy Work Award The recipients of the 2024 Making Democracy Work awards were New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way, CJ Griffin, Sara Peña, and the New Jersey Monitor.
The League of Women Voters awarded Way for her work as Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State, where she expanded access to elections through vote-by-mail options, secure ballot drop boxes, and in person early voting, as well as online access to voter registration.
Griffin is the Director of the Justice Gary S. Stein Public Interest Center at Pashman Stein Walder Hayden. She received the award from the League of Women Voters for her work in litigation regarding social, racial, and economic justice movements.
PSEG Peña is the director of external affairs at PSEG and was recognized for her contributions of over $110,000 to the LUPE Latina Leadership scholarship. Peña also founded the Boys to Leaders Foundation as a nonprofit organization to help coach young men.
The New Jersey Monitor was honored for their coverage of public policy in New Jersey and its continued free, accessible news coverage available to all residents. The award was accepted by Editor Terrence McDonald on behalf of the organization.
