The New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) has endorsed NJEA President Sean M. Spiller in the Democratic gubernatorial primary for 2025. The decision was made by the 125-member PAC Operating Committee following a formal screening process conducted on Saturday, in line with NJEA’s PAC guidelines. All declared candidates were invited to participate, but only Spiller accepted the invitation.
Spiller, a high school science teacher from Wayne, NJ, expressed gratitude for the endorsement. "I’m incredibly proud and deeply humbled to receive the endorsement of my fellow public-school educators," said Spiller. He emphasized the importance of giving educators a voice in shaping New Jersey's future and highlighted his commitment to public education as essential for a strong economy and thriving democracy.
Fellow NJEA officers also praised Spiller's endorsement. Vice President Steve Beatty stated, "I’ve worked with Sean for the last seven years. I know his commitment to our students and public schools." Beatty expressed enthusiasm about Spiller's vision for inclusive politics that unites working families.
Secretary-Treasurer Petal Robertson added, "New Jersey is fortunate to have a candidate as smart, focused and dedicated to justice as Sean Spiller." She commended his willingness to lead and his dedication to social justice, expressing excitement about collaborating with other educators on Spiller’s campaign.
The NJEA has previously made early endorsements in gubernatorial primaries, supporting Phil Murphy in October 2016 and again in October 2020. The Committee has not yet announced plans for screening candidates in the upcoming Republican gubernatorial primary.
