New Jersey honors three individuals for distinguished service to agriculture

Two farmers and a long-time agricultural education teacher and advocate were recognized with Distinguished Service to Agriculture Citations by the New Jersey State Board of Agriculture during the New Jersey State Agricultural Convention earlier this week. The honorees at the Joint Agricultural Convention Dinner Banquet were James Abma Sr., James Giamarese, and Frank Yesalavich.

“Each of these individuals have made significant contributions to agriculture here in the Garden State,” NJDA Assistant Secretary Joe Atchison III said. “Their innovative ideas, dedication, and ability to anticipate factors that would ensure the long-term success of their operations and sectors of the Ag industry make them very deserving honorees.”

James Abma Sr. from Bergen County has demonstrated a lifelong passion for agriculture, leading to the development of Abma’s farm. His efforts include managing vegetable production, expanding composting and topsoil divisions, introducing hayrides and pumpkin picking, and growing small greenhouse operations. Abma's Community Supported Agriculture program offers residents locally grown produce, while community events like the "Potato Dig" provide educational opportunities about food origins. Jim has served on various boards including the Bergen County Board of Agriculture, where he was President for nine years.

James Giamarese of Middlesex County operates approximately 100 acres with his wife Sue. The Giamarese family has been involved in agriculture since migrating from Italy around 1910. They transitioned their farm from wholesale to a "pick your own" model with a retail market. Their farm hosts school tours and community events such as hayrides and pumpkin picking. Jim's leadership roles include serving on the Middlesex County Board of Agriculture and the New Jersey Ag Society Board of Trustees.

Frank Yesalavich was nominated by the Essex County Board of Agriculture for his leadership in agricultural education. He is an active member of professional organizations such as the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE) and New Jersey Association of Agricultural Educators (NJAAE). His contributions include serving on committees, judging competitive events, and piloting national standards for high-quality Career Technical Education programs.
