The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced the opening of a free drop-off, pickup, and waiting lot at John F. Kennedy International Airport’s AirTrain JFK station at Lefferts Boulevard. This initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion at terminal frontages during the summer travel season and peak construction periods.
Passengers can utilize the free on-airport AirTrain for an eight-minute ride to the terminals, avoiding potential delays caused by ongoing construction. The new lot is part of broader efforts to manage anticipated heavy traffic as the airport undergoes significant transformation.
The $19 billion redevelopment project at JFK has reached its peak this summer, with over $200 million in active monthly construction. This year’s summer travel season is expected to set a record with approximately 18.2 million passengers, an increase of 700,000 from last year.
In January 2017, the JFK Vision Plan was unveiled to transform JFK into a world-class airport. The plan includes several major projects: the $9.5 billion development of New Terminal One on the south side, which began in September 2022; a new $4.2 billion Terminal 6 connecting seamlessly with Terminal 5 on the north side, initiated in February 2023; and substantial completions of expansions at Terminals 4 and 8 led by Delta Air Lines and American Airlines respectively.
These privately financed terminal projects are part of a larger $19 billion transformation involving public-private partnerships. The Port Authority's capital investment of $3.9 billion leverages private investments exceeding $15 billion across these developments.
