Governor Phil Murphy announced today the launch of the Aerospace Innovation Center (AIC) in Atlantic County, a collaboration between the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) and the Atlantic County Improvement Authority (ACIA). This facility will be the fifth Strategic Innovation Center (SIC) in New Jersey and the first to focus on aerospace innovation.
Located within the National Aerospace Research & Technology Park (NARTP) in Egg Harbor Township, the AIC will offer advanced research spaces, high-speed connectivity to FAA data systems, and collaborative workspaces. It is part of a broader initiative to position New Jersey as a leader in innovation and technology development.
“Since taking office, it has been my goal to ensure New Jersey is at the forefront of innovation and technology development, including aerospace engineering,” said Governor Murphy. “As the state’s fifth Strategic Innovation Center, the Aerospace Innovation Center will give budding students and entrepreneurs access to state-of-the-art equipment and opportunities to collaborate with experts in the field.”
The NJEDA and ACIA have signed a non-binding letter of intent to form a limited liability company for planning, developing, constructing, and managing this hub. The ACIA will contribute $10.5 million towards construction while NJEDA will invest $8 million. Construction is expected to be completed by October 2025 with full operations commencing in January 2026.
“Governor Murphy is committed to growing New Jersey’s innovation economy by investing in diverse industries,” said NJEDA Chief Executive Officer Tim Sullivan. “Powered by NJEDA’s Strategic Innovation Center program, and paired with Atlantic County’s deep roots in aerospace, the Aerospace Innovation Center will drive new technologies that create jobs and support long-term economic growth.”
The AIC plans partnerships with institutions such as Stockton University, Rowan University, Rutgers School of Engineering, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and the National Institute of Aerospace. NARTP Building One already hosts tenants like General Dynamics Info Tech., Woolpert Engineering, Signature Scientific, and an FAA remote lab.
Senator Vince Polistina expressed his support: “For years we have talked about diversifying our economy in Atlantic County; this initiative finally brings opportunities needed in aerospace and aviation.”
Timothy Edmunds from ACIA also praised local leadership: “We thank County Executive Dennis Levinson for his vision... We are grateful to Governor Murphy for making AIC a reality.”
Mark Loeben from NARTP emphasized its significance: “This marks a transformative moment for Atlantic County... offering unparalleled opportunities for research.”
Michael Viscount from ACEA highlighted its potential impact: “The AIC is set to become a beacon for pioneering advancements... playing a crucial role in shaping this industry’s future.”
Kathleen Coviello from NJEDA noted its strategic location near Atlantic City International Airport would benefit innovators pursuing aerospace technologies.
In May 2024, Governor Murphy also launched other SICs including HAX LLC in Newark and NJ FAST in Hoboken.
