Muazzam Toshmatova wins best health equity paper at ASHEcon conference

Muazzam Toshmatova, Ph.D., a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development, has been awarded the Health Equity award for her paper titled "Immigration Enforcement and Health Insurance Choices: Evidence from Secure Communities." The paper, co-authored with Marina Lovchikova, was recognized at the 13th annual conference of the American Society of Health Economists (ASHEcon), held from June 16-19 in San Diego, California.

ASHEcon annually honors individuals who have made significant contributions to health economics. These awards highlight both emerging and established leaders in the field. According to ASHEcon, "This is a great opportunity to recognize an outstanding peer, colleague, or student. They hope that by recognizing the work of individuals working in health economics, they will not only help elevate the amazing people in the field but will continue to enable excellent research and put a spotlight on the field of health economics."

Toshmatova earned her doctoral degree in Economics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Texas A&M University. Her research focuses on labor, public, and regional economics. As an empirical economist, she employs econometrics, quasi-experimental methods, causal inference, and computational techniques in her research. She has explored how various labor market disruptions such as immigration policies and technological changes impact individuals' labor market outcomes. Additionally, she has been granted U.S. Census Special Sworn Status to conduct research using microdata at the Federal Research Data Center.
