The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that its commercial airports experienced their busiest first half ever in 2024, capped by a record-breaking June. The period saw the region's commercial airports welcome 70.6 million passengers from January through June, an increase of over 972,000 passengers compared to the same period in 2023.
In June alone, a record 13 million passengers were recorded at the region’s commercial airports, surpassing the previous high set in June 2018 by approximately 313,000 passengers. This was also an increase of about 482,000 passengers from June 2023. International travel significantly contributed to this surge with international passenger volume growing by 7 percent from June 2023 to June 2024 and increasing by 8 percent for the first half of the year compared to the same period last year. Popular destinations included Rome, Munich, and London.
The Port of New York and New Jersey handled 708,977 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in June 2024. This marked its fourth consecutive month surpassing the threshold of handling over 700,000 TEUs and its seventh consecutive month of year-over-year growth. The port’s total for June represented a 14 percent increase from June 2023 and a notable rise from pre-pandemic levels in June 2019.
For the first six months of the year, the port handled a total of approximately 4.2 million TEUs—a jump of about 13 percent over the same period in 2023 and a rise of around15 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels in early months of2019.
Regarding vehicular traffic across bridges and tunnels managed by Port Authority, about10.6 million eastbound vehicles used these crossings inJune2024.Average daily traffic volume increased about3percentfromMaytoJune.Eastboundvehiculartrafficforthefirsthalfof theyearreachedapproximately59.8millionvehicles—matchingstrongvolumesobservedin2019andduringthesameperiodin2023.
