NJ Transit announces hearings on proposed closure of Kingsland Rail Station

NJ TRANSIT will host two in-person public hearings on the future of the Kingsland rail station on August 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lyndhurst Town Hall’s council chambers, located at 367 Valley Brook Avenue, Lyndhurst.

Under the proposal, the Kingsland rail station on NJ TRANSIT’s Main Line, situated at 250 Ridge Road, Lyndhurst, would close in 2025. This closure would occur only after a new Lyndhurst rail station has opened at 366 Court Avenue at Delafield Avenue and service has begun. Service to the former Kingsland rail station is currently anticipated to cease by May 2025.

Built in 1918, the Kingsland station building has not been open to the public for the past 15 years. The station lacks sufficient parking and is not ADA compliant. Accessing the platforms from street level requires using stairs as there is no elevator option. The condition of the station raises equity concerns as well as passenger circulation and experience issues.

The new Lyndhurst Station will be fully ADA accessible, providing high-level platforms and new elevators, stairs, and canopies for an enhanced travel experience for all customers. The new Lyndhurst station is approximately a three-minute drive from the Kingsland station.

The public hearing location is accessible for persons with disabilities. Individuals requesting a sign language interpreter, language assistance or other accommodation should contact the Public Hearing Office at (973) 491-8520 or TTY (800) 772-2287 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, no later than August 8, 2024, so that NJ TRANSIT can make necessary arrangements.
