Governor orders flags at half-staff for late Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr

Governor Murphy today signed Executive Order No. 366, mandating U.S. and New Jersey flags to be flown at half-staff from Tuesday, August 27 through Wednesday, August 28. This gesture honors the memory of United States Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr., whose services will be held during this period.

Congressman Bill Pascrell passed away on August 21, 2024. He is survived by his wife Elsie; children Bill, David, and Glenn; and six grandchildren. His political career spanned 14 terms in Congress, beginning with his election in 1996 to represent New Jersey’s former 8th Congressional District and continuing with his election in 2012 to represent New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District. Prior to his congressional service, Congressman Pascrell served in the United States Army and Army Reserve, worked as an educator, and held positions in the New Jersey General Assembly as well as serving as mayor of Paterson. Throughout his career, he was known for his dedication to public service.

“Congressman Bill Pascrell was an unwavering champion for New Jersey’s most vulnerable residents,” said Governor Murphy. “A son and lifelong resident of Paterson, Congressman Pascrell tirelessly championed economic opportunity, better access to affordable health care, and fairer tax policies for families across America. Tammy and I extend our condolences to his loved ones and are forever grateful for his extraordinary life of service.”
