Governor Murphy expresses condolences over deaths of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy issued a statement on August 30, 2024, addressing the tragic deaths of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau. The brothers were killed while biking in Oldmans Township.

“Tammy and I are heartbroken by the shocking and tragic loss of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, who were killed yesterday evening while biking in Oldmans Township," said Murphy.

The Gaudreau siblings were notable figures in New Jersey. They developed their love for hockey in South Jersey rinks before advancing to Boston College, where they became star players on the men's hockey team.

Johnny Gaudreau continued his career in the NHL, most recently playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was affectionately known as “Johnny Hockey” and earned admiration from fans and fellow players alike.

Matthew Gaudreau focused on nurturing young athletes with a passion for hockey. After stints in the AHL and ECHL, he returned to South Jersey to serve as head hockey coach at Gloucester Catholic, his alma mater.

“To every member of the Gaudreau family, please know that the people of New Jersey grieve with you,” Murphy added.

He extended heartfelt prayers to Johnny’s wife Meredith and their children Noa and Johnny; Matthew’s wife Madeline; their parents Jane and Guy; and sisters Katie and Kristen.
