Biden-Harris administration faces criticism over border crisis impact on legal immigration

The Biden-Harris administration's handling of the border crisis has reportedly shifted American public opinion against immigrants, including those who have entered the country legally. According to a recent AP poll, only 40% of Americans now view skilled immigrants as a significant benefit to the nation, while 32% perceive legal immigrants as criminals.

Akash Chougule, Vice President of Americans for Prosperity (AFP) and himself a son of immigrants, articulated this sentiment in his op-ed for National Review. "The Biden-Harris administration has dramatically weakened support for legal immigration by overseeing an unprecedented surge in illegal immigration," Chougule stated.

Since February 2021, approximately nine million individuals have crossed the southern border illegally. This influx has led to widespread dissatisfaction with the government's enforcement capabilities. Some Americans are becoming increasingly skeptical about immigration overall, with many on the political right viewing legal immigrants unfavorably.

Chougule emphasized the importance of legal immigration for America's continued success and prosperity. "Halting legal immigration would threaten our country no less than unfettered illegal immigration does. Our country needs legal immigrants like my dad who will build up our country and communities," he wrote. He further noted that immigrants play a crucial role in addressing worker shortages across various sectors, from manufacturing to medicine.

For America to continue attracting top talent globally, Chougule argued that securing the border should be a priority for future presidents and Congresses. He concluded by urging legislative action: "We have the policies to do that, and Americans overwhelmingly support them. We only need Congress and the Executive to act."
