Lane closures are planned this week at several key transportation hubs, including the George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, and Outerbridge Crossing. Additionally, travelers using Newark Liberty Terminal B should expect security screening delays due to ongoing airside rehabilitation work.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey advises travelers to plan ahead and allow extra travel time from September 13 to 19. Construction at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is causing significant detours and delays. The $19 billion redevelopment project aims to transform JFK into a global gateway with new terminals and amenities.
For those traveling through JFK, the Port Authority recommends using mass transit options such as MTA New York City Transit subway or buses, or MTA Long Island Rail Road trains from Grand Central Terminal or Penn Station to the AirTrain JFK station at Jamaica. Motorists can use the free drop-off, pickup, and waiting lot at Lefferts Boulevard AirTrain JFK station for an eight-minute ride to airport terminals.
Specific lane closures include:
**George Washington Bridge:**
- Multiple lane closures from Friday night through Saturday morning.
- Traffic holds on Sunday due to the annual Andiamo Benefit Motorcycle Run.
**Holland Tunnel:**
- Nightly closures of the New Jersey-bound tube from Monday through Thursday.
- One eastbound lane closure each night from Monday through Thursday.
**Lincoln Tunnel:**
- Various tube closures on Saturday and Monday nights.
- Redirection of traffic during these periods.
**Outerbridge Crossing:**
- Westbound right lane closure on Monday night.
- Eastbound right lane closure on Tuesday night.
At Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal B, extended security wait times are expected until late October. Passengers should arrive two to three hours before their scheduled departure.
JFK construction impacts include:
- Detours for motorists arriving at Terminals 7 and 8.
- Relocation of for-hire vehicle pickups at Terminal 4.
- Closure of JFK Expressway for customers traveling to/from Terminal 1.
- Relocation of taxi stands and parking adjustments at Terminal 5.
All rental car companies serving Newark Liberty now operate out of a consolidated rental car center within Parking A garage. Peak period parking rates are in effect at JFK, Newark Liberty International, and LaGuardia airports. Travelers are encouraged to use mass transit or pre-book parking spaces.
LaGuardia Link Q70 bus service remains fare-free year-round as announced by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul in April 2022.
PATH train services will experience changes over the weekend due to track replacement and maintenance between Newark-Penn Station and Journal Square. Overnight access limitations will be in place at PATH World Trade Center station for cleaning and security purposes.
