Marotta Controls celebrates commissioning of USS New Jersey submarine

Marotta Controls, an aerospace and defense supplier, recently marked the commissioning of the USS New Jersey, the U.S. Navy’s 23rd Virginia-class attack submarine. The submarine is named after New Jersey, where Marotta is headquartered.

More than 150 parts from Marotta are installed on the new SSN 796 attack submarine. This continues the company's over 65-year legacy of providing components for nearly every major U.S. naval vessel.

The USS New Jersey is the third naval vessel named after the state and the first submarine fully designed to support an integrated male and female crew. The Virginia class submarines are nuclear-powered, cruise missile fast-attack vessels used by the U.S. military.

After operational exercises and testing at Norfolk Naval Station, the vessel was delivered to Naval Weapons Station Earle in Middletown, New Jersey for its September 14 commission ceremony.

“Today was a very meaningful day. The commissioning of the USS NEW JERSEY is near and dear to our hearts here at Marotta Controls – not just because this world-class submarine is named after our home state, but because our entire team has given their all in delivering mission-critical components that will empower her crew to complete their mission,” said Patrick Marotta, president and CEO of Marotta Controls.

“Having the Marotta team onsite at this celebration is humbling and brings us great pride, especially to those team members who have worked so hard to equip our U.S. military partners with technology designed to endure battle, keep crews safe, and stand the test of time,” added Marotta.

The Virginia class uses modular construction, open architecture, and commercial off-the-shelf components to remain up-to-date throughout its operational life by rapidly introducing new systems and payloads.

Marotta has developed over 1,000 unique parts for U.S. Navy programs over the years. The company will also provide products for upcoming Columbia-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines set to replace Ohio-class submarines.

Marotta sponsored commission day festivities and hosted employees eager to witness this event firsthand.

“Participating in the commissioning of the USS NEW JERSEY gives each of our team members a better understanding of the Marotta legacy and the important role our work plays in U.S. military program success,” said Patrick Marotta.

USS NEW JERSEY crew members met with Marotta's executive team at their Montville facility on July 18. They were briefed on Marotta’s history with the U.S. Navy and toured facilities where complex valve manifolds and other components for their submarine are assembled and tested.
