Proposal suggests 12 new bus routes for Pennsylvania

Over the last few decades, Pennsylvania’s intercity bus network has seen significant reductions in service. These cuts have limited Pennsylvanians' access to jobs and amenities in other towns, effectively requiring private car ownership for travel between urban centers and small towns across the state. This trend poses challenges to Pennsylvania's economic, social, and climate goals.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has managed to save ten private routes through its existing Intercity Bus Program. However, the majority of the state's network continues to decline. County agencies face limitations in funding and jurisdiction, preventing them from running necessary long-haul routes.

In contrast, states like Colorado have successfully launched state-operated bus systems to address gaps in their networks.

A new project proposes that PennDOT introduce 12 new bus routes under the brand Penn Express. These routes would connect 85 communities across the state with limited-stop, express service along major corridors that are currently unserved or underserved. The new routes aim to integrate with existing intercity and local transit systems.
