ACLU-NJ responds positively to new state police reform measures

The ACLU of New Jersey has responded to the recent reform recommendations for the New Jersey State Police put forth by the Office of the Attorney General. The statement from Amol Sinha, Executive Director of ACLU-NJ, commends Attorney General Platkin for implementing significant accountability measures.

“We applaud Attorney General Platkin for implementing meaningful accountability measures for the New Jersey State Police. For years, the ACLU-NJ has received complaints regarding Internal Affairs and discriminatory hiring and advancement within the State Police. The reports released today echo what advocates have long warned, and law enforcement must be held accountable to the communities they are meant to serve," said Sinha.

Sinha highlighted concerns over police authority and misconduct, emphasizing that such actions often disproportionately impact Black and brown communities. "Police wield immense authority to detain, search, arrest, and use deadly force, but too often officers are not disciplined for misconduct, which disproportionately harms Black and brown communities," he stated.

He further praised the Attorney General’s efforts in proposing new mechanisms for accountability as a necessary move toward systemic change. “The Attorney General’s leadership in proposing additional mechanisms for accountability is a crucial step toward realizing the comprehensive change needed for New Jersey to build a fairer, more just future,” Sinha concluded.
