The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has issued a travel advisory for the week of September 27 to October 3, urging travelers to plan ahead due to lane closures and service changes at several key transportation hubs.
Significant construction is underway at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) as part of a $19 billion redevelopment project. Motorists and for-hire vehicle users should expect delays or reroutes. The Port Authority advises using mass transit options such as MTA New York City Transit subway, buses, or MTA Long Island Rail Road to reach the airport.
"These roadway changes are required to accommodate the work underway to transform JFK into a world-class global gateway with new terminals, local concessions, family-friendly amenities, and a best-in-class air travel experience," stated the Port Authority. More information on travel impacts can be found at Construction.JFKAirport.com.
Lane closures are scheduled at various locations:
**George Washington Bridge:**
- Multiple lanes will be closed from Friday night through Sunday morning.
- Bicycle traffic will increase on Saturday due to an annual event.
**Holland Tunnel:**
- The New Jersey-bound tube will close overnight from Sunday through Wednesday for Superstorm Sandy-related repairs.
- One eastbound lane will close nightly from Sunday through Tuesday.
**Lincoln Tunnel:**
- Different tubes will close during specified hours from Saturday through Thursday.
**Bayonne Bridge:**
- Southbound right lane and ramp closures are planned for Tuesday and Friday.
**Outerbridge Crossing:**
- A westbound right lane will close overnight on Monday and Tuesday.
AirTrain services will also be affected:
- AirTrain Newark will suspend service between Rail Link and P4 stations from late Saturday night to early Sunday morning.
- AirTrain JFK will suspend service on Monday morning. Free shuttle buses will provide alternate transportation in both cases.
At Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal B, ongoing airside rehabilitation work may result in extended security wait times. Passengers should arrive two to three hours before their departure time.
Additional advisories include detours for motorists heading to JFK Terminals 7 and 8 via Van Wyck Expressway, relocated for-hire vehicle pickups at Terminal 4, and changes in parking arrangements at Terminal 5's Yellow Parking Lot dedicated for individuals with special needs or disabilities.
The consolidated rental car center at Newark Liberty International Airport now operates out of Parking A garage levels 1 through 3. All rental transactions occur here with connections via AirTrain Newark or pedestrian bridge from Terminal A.
Travelers are encouraged to use public transit due to peak period parking rates now in effect at JFK, Newark Liberty International, and LaGuardia airports. Pre-booking parking spaces is recommended to avoid higher rates and ensure availability.
For PATH customers using the World Trade Center station overnight, access is limited from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., with only street-level entrances open due to enhanced cleaning protocols.
