New Jersey National Guard deploys to aid Florida's Hurricane Milton response

The New Jersey Army National Guard is deploying around 80 soldiers and 30 military vehicles to assist with Hurricane Milton response efforts in Camp Blanding, Florida. This deployment includes a convoy from the 143d Transportation Company and the 253d Transportation Company, part of the 42d Regional Support Group. They are expected to arrive by the end of the week as Hurricane Milton approaches the Gulf Coast of Florida.

Governor Phil Murphy expressed solidarity with those affected, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Florida as a second massive storm in as many weeks bears down on our nation’s Gulf Coast.” He added that New Jersey is dedicated to helping Floridians impacted by the hurricane, including sending support to the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

Once at Camp Blanding, the unit will collaborate with both the Florida Division of Emergency Management and the Florida National Guard. Their responsibilities may include transporting personnel into areas affected by severe weather and delivering essential supplies.

Colonel Yvonne L. Mays, Acting Adjutant General of New Jersey, emphasized the connection between states: “Floridians are family, and we know from personal experience what hurricane recovery means for our communities.” She assured that their soldiers are prepared to assist those in need.

This assistance was provided following a request through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), a mutual aid agreement among states. Governors from Minnesota and Ohio have also authorized emergency support under EMAC, which coordinates personnel, equipment, and resources for disaster response across all U.S. states, territories, and Washington D.C.
